Mercedes-Benz is redefining what luxury materials look like in the electric era.

Unveiled at CES 2026 in Las Vegas, the brand’s latest GLC with EQ Technology marks a significant milestone for the German manufacturer: it is the first Mercedes-Benz vehicle to feature a fully vegan-certified interior, free from animal-derived materials at every touchpoint.
Rather than compromising on refinement, the brand has taken a material-science-led approach—one that replaces traditional leather and animal-based finishes with advanced alternatives designed to meet modern ethical and sustainability expectations.

Reinventing Leather Without Animals
At the heart of the GLC’s cabin is ARTICO, Mercedes-Benz’s proprietary leather alternative. Designed to replicate the look, feel, and durability of traditional leather, ARTICO is produced entirely without animal products or fibers.
The material is used extensively throughout the interior, including seat upholstery, steering wheel surfaces, and high-contact trim areas. Complementing ARTICO are certified vegan textiles and microfiber materials applied across door panels, pillars, headliners, and carpeting—creating a cohesive, premium interior without reliance on animal-derived components.
Soft-touch surfaces traditionally finished with suede or leather are instead lined with synthetic microfiber fleece, while the vehicle’s floor and boot carpets are made using textile blends that exclude wool and other animal fibers, incorporating recycled materials for added environmental benefit.

A Cabin Engineered Without Animal Derivatives
Mercedes-Benz’s approach extends beyond visible materials. According to the company, synthetic polymers have replaced animal-based binders, coatings, and additives across various interior components. Even during manufacturing, no animal-derived glues, dyes, coatings, or processing agents are used.
This end-to-end redesign ensures that the vehicle’s vegan credentials are not cosmetic, but structural—embedded into both materials and production processes.
Certified by The Vegan Society
To validate its claims, Mercedes-Benz partnered with The Vegan Society, one of the world’s most recognised independent certification bodies. Every soft interior component underwent detailed testing and auditing, including a review of raw materials, additives, and manufacturing methods.
The process involved re-examining existing materials already used across Mercedes-Benz vehicles to identify even trace animal-derived elements. Where such ingredients were found, engineers worked closely with suppliers to reformulate or replace them. Only after these changes were implemented did The Vegan Society conduct a full independent audit.
In total, approximately 100 individual material components sourced from multiple suppliers were assessed. To qualify for certification, materials had to meet strict criteria: no animal products or derivatives, no animal testing, and preventative measures against cross-contamination wherever practically possible.
The result is official certification under The Vegan Society’s Vegan Trademark, which will appear in Mercedes-Benz’s vehicle configurator when customers select the optional Vegan Package.

A First for the Automotive Industry
With the GLC electric model, Mercedes-Benz becomes the first automotive manufacturer to offer a vehicle interior fully certified under The Vegan Society’s Vegan Trademark—an industry-first achievement that signals a broader shift in how luxury brands approach material innovation.
Availability of the vegan interior package for the GLC with EQ Technology is expected to begin for U.S. customers in the second half of 2026, positioning the model at the intersection of ethical design, advanced electrification, and contemporary luxury.
Grandiose Perspective
Luxury is no longer defined solely by rarity or tradition—it is increasingly shaped by intention.
With its vegan-certified electric interior, Mercedes-Benz demonstrates that sustainability, ethics, and refinement can coexist without compromise. The GLC’s cabin is not a rejection of luxury, but an evolution of it—one that reflects changing values while preserving the brand’s commitment to quality and innovation.
In the electric age, the future of luxury may not come wrapped in leather—but it will still feel unmistakably premium.
