Renowned Japanese architect Tadao Ando has unveiled the design for the Dubai Museum of Art (DUMA) — a new cultural landmark poised to redefine Dubai’s artistic skyline. Set along the city’s shimmering saltwater creek, the museum’s twisting, monolithic form appears to emerge gracefully from the water, blurring the line between land and sea.
The five-storey structure features sweeping curves and smooth white façades, punctuated by triangular openings that ascend in rhythm with the building’s upward twist. The result is an architectural composition that feels both dynamic and serene — a visual tribute to Dubai’s maritime heritage and its historic association with pearl diving.
Commissioned by the Al-Futtaim Group, the museum embodies Ando’s signature dialogue between light, geometry, and silence, positioning DUMA as a symbol of modern creativity in the Middle East.

“The Dubai Museum of Art is more than an architectural landmark; it is a cultural statement that reflects Dubai’s openness to creativity and its role in connecting global cultures,” said Omar Al Futtaim, CEO of Al-Futtaim Group.
“Entrusting this vision to Tadao Ando ensures that the museum will stand as a serene dialogue between nature, water, and the human spirit — a masterpiece of restraint and emotion.”
A Dialogue of Light and Form
Inside, Ando’s minimalist mastery comes to life. The gallery spaces, spread across the first and second floors, revolve around a central oculus — a circular skylight that filters daylight through the heart of the museum, creating a soft, pearlescent glow reminiscent of light on water.
On the uppermost floor, visitors will find an exclusive VIP lounge and restaurant, framed by floor-to-ceiling glass panels that open onto a shaded terrace with panoramic views of Dubai’s skyline. Complementing these are a library, study rooms, and creative training spaces designed to nurture emerging artists and designers.

A Cultural Beacon for Dubai
When complete, DUMA will showcase contemporary art from established and emerging talents worldwide, hosting exhibitions, artist talks, and educational initiatives aimed at cultivating the city’s growing creative community.
Speaking on the project, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai, remarked:
“The Dubai Museum of Art will strengthen our city’s position as a global hub for culture and creativity. This landmark affirms Dubai’s commitment to fostering innovation and supporting the creative economy.”

A New Chapter in Architectural Poetry
Set on a circular platform that appears to float above the water, the museum’s form captures Ando’s fascination with movement and stillness. The curved concrete walls and luminous interiors evoke the rhythm of the surrounding sea, transforming architecture into a living sculpture.
Viewed from the creek, DUMA reflects Dubai’s spirit — modern, fluid, and forward-looking, yet rooted in natural beauty and cultural resonance.
With this design, Tadao Ando adds another chapter to his global architectural legacy, joining his recent works such as the National Museum of Uzbekistan and a cave-like gallery in South Korea for British sculptor Antony Gormley.
