Nearly 100 artists from 35 countries will transform Australia’s National Gallery of Victoria into one of the world’s most important cultural destinations—with South African visual activist Zanele Muholi taking centre stage.

Every three years, the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) presents an exhibition that captures the creative pulse of our time.

NGV Triennial 2026 promises to be its most ambitious edition yet.

Bringing together almost 100 artists, designers and architects from 35 countries, the exhibition features more than 80 projects spanning contemporary art, architecture, fashion, photography, design and emerging technologies. The result is less an exhibition than a global conversation—one exploring identity, memory, sustainability, artificial intelligence and the evolving role of culture in society.

For South African audiences, however, one commission stands above the rest.

Zanele Muholi Takes Centre Stage

Internationally celebrated visual activist and artist Zanele Muholi will unveil one of the exhibition’s landmark commissions, Umkhuseli (The Protector), a monumental 3.3-metre sculpture portraying Muholi as the Virgin Mary.

Powerful and deeply symbolic, the work confronts gender-based violence while exploring themes of protection, dignity and empathy. Expanding Muholi’s acclaimed visual activism into sculpture, the commission reinforces their position as one of the most influential contemporary artists working today.

For Grandiose readers, Muholi’s presence represents more than national pride.

It is further evidence that South African artists continue to shape the global cultural landscape from the world’s leading museums and galleries.

Where Art Meets Architecture

Beyond its extraordinary art programme, NGV Triennial has become equally recognised for presenting groundbreaking architecture and design.

Among this year’s highlights is acclaimed Chinese architect Xu Tiantian, whose immersive bamboo installation reimagines architecture as a place for gathering, reflection and community.

The exhibition also features internationally respected practitioners working across furniture, product design and spatial installation, reinforcing the increasingly fluid relationship between architecture, craft and contemporary art.

Contemporary Culture Through New Technology

Technology forms another defining thread throughout the exhibition.

Korean artist Ayoung Kim explores artificial intelligence, digital labour and virtual identity through immersive moving-image works that blend gaming engines, CGI and machine learning.

Meanwhile, celebrated American artist Jenny Holzer returns with WTF, an LED-based installation examining misinformation, digital discourse and the overwhelming pace of contemporary communication.

Together, the projects demonstrate how artists continue to challenge technology rather than simply embrace it.

Photography’s Greatest Voices

Photography also takes centre stage.

German artist Wolfgang Tillmans presents a major installation bringing together works spanning more than three decades, while acclaimed American artist Sarah Sze examines our increasingly fragmented relationship with images through an immersive environment combining projection, sculpture and everyday objects.

Their works reflect a generation navigating life between physical and digital realities.

Indigenous Knowledge and Cultural Memory

One of the exhibition’s most moving commissions comes from Wunambal Gaambera and Worrora artist Angelina Karadada Boona, whose monumental illuminated interpretation of the Wandjina ancestral figure transforms NGV’s iconic Waterwall.

Australian artist Christian Thompson contributes a powerful three-channel operatic film exploring language, ancestry and Indigenous identity, while internationally acclaimed writer Ocean Vuong presents an intimate photographic meditation on migration, labour and family memory.

Collectively, these works remind visitors that contemporary art remains deeply rooted in cultural heritage and lived experience.

More Than an Exhibition

NGV Triennial has evolved into far more than a museum exhibition.

It has become one of the world’s leading platforms where art, design, architecture, fashion and technology intersect.

This year’s edition includes 25 world-premiere commissions, numerous major acquisitions for the NGV Collection and immersive installations that invite visitors to experience culture through sight, sound, movement and participation.

It reflects the growing importance of multidisciplinary creativity in shaping the future of museums.

Grandiose Perspective

Luxury today extends beyond objects.

It increasingly resides in access to extraordinary cultural experiences.

NGV Triennial 2026 embodies that evolution, bringing together some of the world’s most influential creative voices within a single institution while reaffirming art’s power to challenge, inspire and connect.

For South Africans, the exhibition carries additional significance.

At its heart stands Zanele Muholi—an artist whose work continues to redefine representation, identity and visual storytelling on the international stage.

As Melbourne prepares to welcome one of the year’s most anticipated cultural events, Muholi’s monumental commission serves as a powerful reminder that South African creativity continues to shape conversations far beyond our borders.

NGV Triennial 2026 runs from 13 December 2026 to 11 April 2027 at NGV International, Melbourne. Admission is free.

Before every Bentley becomes an icon, it begins as Before every Bentley becomes an icon, it begins as a sketch.

At the 2026 Goodwood Festival of Speed, Bentley celebrated the art behind automotive design by inviting acclaimed illustrator Stefan Marjoram to become its Artist-in-Residence.

Rather than simply displaying extraordinary cars, Bentley transformed its pavilion into a live studio where visitors watched modern grand tourers and century-old classics come to life through hand-drawn illustrations.

It’s a reminder that true luxury starts long before the factory floor—with imagination, creativity and the first confident line of a pencil.

Because every masterpiece begins as an idea.
