A&K Sanctuary will bring five private Airstream suites to the world’s largest salt flat in late 2027, creating an intimate camp designed around solitude, craftsmanship and the extraordinary landscape of Bolivia’s Altiplano.
There are destinations where luxury is defined by what surrounds you, and then there are places where the landscape is so vast that the accommodation becomes almost secondary. Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni belongs to the latter. Stretching across roughly 12,000 square kilometres, the world’s largest salt flat can transform from a cracked expanse of geometric salt formations into an enormous mirror reflecting the sky.
From late 2027, travellers will be able to experience that landscape in an entirely different way.
Samkani Camp, the latest property from A&K Sanctuary, will introduce five private Airstream suites directly on the salar, accompanied by a sixth Airstream dedicated to dining and lounging. The concept brings the comforts of a luxury camp into one of South America’s most remote environments, creating a stay defined less by conventional resort infrastructure than by space, silence and the extraordinary natural theatre surrounding it.
An Airstream Camp In The Middle Of The Salar
Samkani Camp will consist of six Airstreams, with five serving as individual guest suites and a sixth positioned at the centre as the social heart of the camp.
The suites have been architect-designed to work within the landscape rather than compete with it. Their metallic exteriors echo the colours of the salt and sky, allowing the structures to sit quietly against the immense horizon.
Inside, the approach becomes more tactile. Blue Bolivian marble and chrome detailing introduce a polished, contemporary character, creating a deliberate contrast with the rawness of the environment outside.
The central Airstream will house the dining room and lounge, complete with its own bar, providing guests with a communal space while maintaining the intimate scale of the camp.
It is an unusual combination: an object historically associated with mobility becoming the foundation for a permanent luxury experience in one of the world’s most extraordinary landscapes.
A Landscape Without Boundaries
The real attraction, however, remains outside.
Guests at Samkani Camp will typically find themselves 20 to 30 kilometres from any other human presence, offering a degree of isolation that is increasingly difficult to find in luxury travel.
The landscape changes dramatically depending on the season and conditions. During dry periods, the salar reveals its characteristic hexagonal salt formations, creating a seemingly endless white surface. When covered by a thin layer of water, the terrain becomes a vast reflective plane in which the horizon almost disappears.
At night, the experience changes again.
With little surrounding light pollution, the sky becomes an integral part of the destination. From the camp, the stars extend towards the horizon in every direction, creating the kind of uninterrupted celestial view that is increasingly rare elsewhere.
The name Samkani comes from Aymara, the indigenous language of Bolivia’s Altiplano, and translates as “the one who dreams.”
It is an appropriate name for a property whose defining luxury is the ability to disappear into an environment of almost unimaginable scale.
Beyond The Camp
The experience is designed to extend beyond the Airstreams themselves.
Every stay will include a private guide and driver, with more than 30 experiences planned across the salar. Some will be exclusive to A&K Sanctuary guests.
Among the experiences are visits to hidden islands and volcanic caves, allowing travellers to explore the geological character of the region rather than simply observing the salt flat from the camp.
Stargazing will form another central element, taking advantage of the clarity of the night sky and the absence of significant surrounding development.
A&K’s Bolivian team will lead the excursions, drawing on local expertise to interpret the landscape and its distinctive environments.
The result is less about filling an itinerary than allowing the destination to dictate the pace of the stay.
Designing For A Remote Environment
Samkani also represents a continuation of A&K Sanctuary’s experience in creating luxury accommodation in remote environments.
The brand’s portfolio includes camps and lodges across Eastern and Southern Africa as well as riverboats in Egypt and Peru. In Bolivia, that experience is being adapted to a landscape with a very different set of conditions.
The Airstream format becomes particularly relevant here. Rather than constructing a conventional lodge across the salar, the concept creates a compact environment that can deliver the comforts expected from luxury accommodation while maintaining a much closer relationship with the landscape.
The result is a property that feels deliberately restrained.
There is no attempt to overwhelm the salar with architecture. Instead, the camp’s identity comes from its materials, its scale and the contrast between the highly considered interiors and the extraordinary emptiness beyond them.
A Different Definition Of Luxury
Samkani Camp arrives at an interesting moment in luxury travel, when the most sought-after experiences are increasingly defined by access rather than excess.
The proposition here is remarkably simple: wake up in one of the world’s most extraordinary landscapes, spend the day exploring it with a private guide and return to a carefully designed suite with almost nothing on the horizon but salt, sky and silence.
That sense of isolation is difficult to manufacture.
And while the Airstreams provide the comfort, the salar provides the spectacle.
Samkani Camp Opens In 2027
Samkani Camp is scheduled to welcome its first guests in late 2027, with bookings expected to open ahead of the launch. The property will be available as part of A&K Tailormade journeys and Small Group Journeys to Bolivia.
For travellers drawn to the world’s remote landscapes, the proposition is compelling precisely because it does not attempt to tame the destination.
Samkani places luxury inside the Salar de Uyuni while allowing the landscape to remain the dominant presence. Five private suites, one central gathering space and thousands of square kilometres of salt and sky create an experience in which the greatest luxury may ultimately be the absence of everything else.
