An exceptional 1926 Fine and Rare bottle will headline Sotheby’s first live auction at The Macallan Estate, with an estimate of up to approximately R46 million.

The world of whisky collecting is heading to Speyside for an auction with a rare sense of provenance. On 9 October, Sotheby’s will host Live from The Macallan Estate, the first live auction ever held at the legendary distillery, bringing together an exceptional selection of rare single malts, drawn almost exclusively from private collections.

The occasion carries particular significance for The Macallan. The sale marks the centenary of the distillation of the legendary Macallan 1926, one of the most coveted bottles in the history of Scotch whisky.

At the centre of the auction will be a bottle of The Macallan Fine and Rare 60 Years Old 1926, carrying an estimate of approximately US$2.2 million to US$2.8 million, or roughly R36.5 million to R46.5 million.

The Bottle That Became A Legend

Distilled in 1926 and matured for six decades in sherry-seasoned oak cask number 263, the whisky was bottled in 1986.

Only 40 bottles were produced from the cask, making the 1926 vintage exceptionally scarce from the outset. Of those, just 14 carried the Fine and Rare label, while others were distinguished by specially commissioned artwork, including designs by Sir Peter Blake and Valerio Adami.

That combination of age, scarcity, provenance and artistic identity has transformed the 1926 into something considerably more significant than a bottle of whisky.

It has become a collectible object in its own right.

A Record-Breaking Pedigree

The Macallan 1926 already occupies a remarkable position in the auction world.

In November 2023, Sotheby’s London sold The Macallan Adami 1926 for approximately US$2.7 million, establishing what Sotheby’s described as a world record for any bottle of wine or spirit.

The upcoming Fine and Rare example is therefore returning to the market with an extraordinary auction pedigree behind it.

Its estimated value of up to US$2.8 million places it within the uppermost tier of the global collectibles market, where fine whisky increasingly intersects with art, watches and other forms of alternative luxury collecting.

The Estate Becomes The Auction Room

Perhaps the most significant element of the October sale is not simply what will be sold, but where it will be sold.

Rather than bringing The Macallan to one of the traditional international auction centres, Sotheby’s is taking the auction to the distillery itself.

The Macallan Estate in Speyside becomes both the setting and the context for the sale, bringing collectors directly into the landscape in which the whisky was created.

For a category increasingly defined by provenance and storytelling, that physical connection adds another layer to the collecting experience.

Whisky As A Collectible

The growing value of bottles such as the Macallan 1926 reflects the evolution of rare whisky from luxury consumption into serious collecting.

The most exceptional bottles are valued not only for what is inside them, but for their age, scarcity, condition, provenance, design and place within whisky history.

That makes them increasingly comparable to other collectible categories, where ownership can be as much about cultural significance as financial value.

For collectors in South Africa, where premium whisky has a particularly established following, the international market offers another dimension to that culture: rare bottles becoming objects of connoisseurship, provenance and legacy.

A Century Of The Macallan 1926

The October auction arrives exactly 100 years after the vintage that created the legend was distilled.

That anniversary gives the sale a significance beyond the individual lots. It is a celebration of a whisky that has moved from Speyside production to the highest levels of international collecting.

And with the 1926 Fine and Rare bottle expected to reach as much as R46 million, the auction will once again demonstrate just how far the world’s most exceptional spirits can travel beyond the cellar.

A century after its distillation, The Macallan 1926 remains one of whisky’s most enduring expressions of rarity, craftsmanship and provenance.

At the 2026 Goodwood Festival of Speed, Bentley celebrated the art behind automotive design by inviting acclaimed illustrator Stefan Marjoram to become its Artist-in-Residence.

Rather than simply displaying extraordinary cars, Bentley transformed its pavilion into a live studio where visitors watched modern grand tourers and century-old classics come to life through hand-drawn illustrations.

It’s a reminder that true luxury starts long before the factory floor—with imagination, creativity and the first confident line of a pencil.

Because every masterpiece begins as an idea.
