BMW has unveiled the fifth-generation X5, bringing the most significant transformation in the luxury SUV’s 27-year history. With its first fully electric variant, an all-new Neue Klasse-inspired design language, and a digital cockpit that redefines the driving experience, the new BMW X5 is preparing to set a fresh benchmark in the premium Sports Activity Vehicle segment.

Since its debut in 1999, the BMW X5 has defined what a luxury performance SUV should be. More than two decades later, the model enters a new era by embracing electrification without abandoning the versatility and driving dynamics that made it one of BMW’s global best-sellers. The fifth-generation X5 introduces the widest range of powertrains ever offered on a BMW model, while integrating technologies first developed for the brand’s revolutionary Neue Klasse platform.

BMW’s First Electric X5

The biggest headline is undoubtedly the arrival of the BMW iX5 60 xDrive, marking the first fully electric X5 ever produced.

Powered by BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology, the luxury SUV features an 800-volt electrical architecture, a 141 kWh battery pack and dual electric motors producing a combined 425 kW (578 hp) and 805 Nm of torque. BMW claims a remarkable WLTP driving range of up to 845 kilometres, placing the iX5 among the longest-range premium electric SUVs on the market. Fast-charging capabilities of up to 460 kW allow the battery to charge from 10 to 80 percent in just 23 minutes under ideal conditions.

The model also introduces bidirectional charging capability, allowing the vehicle to power external devices and integrate more effectively into future energy ecosystems.

South African customers will receive three models at launch:

  • BMW X5 xDrive40d
  • BMW X5 50e xDrive Plug-in Hybrid
  • BMW iX5 60 xDrive

Neue Klasse Design Meets X5 Heritage

Visually, the new X5 represents one of BMW’s boldest design evolutions in years.

While retaining its familiar SUV proportions, the new model adopts the minimalist, monolithic styling language first introduced by the Neue Klasse concept vehicles. The front fascia is dominated by an upright BMW Kidney Iconic Glow, now paired with entirely new double-X lighting signatures making their production debut.

Another standout feature is the introduction of BMW Winglet door handles, seamlessly integrated into the B- and C-pillars. The electrically powered doors open with the lightest touch while Soft-Close functionality comes as standard.

Customers will be able to personalise the SUV through eleven exterior paint finishes, wheel sizes up to 23 inches, and optional M Sport packages alongside an extensive catalogue of M Performance accessories.

A Cabin Designed Around Digital Luxury

Inside, BMW has completely reimagined the X5’s interior.

Clean architectural lines, slate and glass trim surfaces, and an uncluttered layout create an atmosphere that feels more like a contemporary lounge than a traditional SUV cabin. BMW also becomes the first manufacturer to introduce natural slate as an interior decorative surface.

The dashboard centres around BMW’s next-generation digital ecosystem, featuring:

  • BMW Panoramic Vision
  • BMW Operating System X
  • Free-cut Central Display
  • BMW 3D Head-Up Display
  • Optional BMW Passenger Screen
  • New multifunction steering wheel

Together they create one of the most advanced digital interfaces yet seen in a production BMW.

Ambient lighting stretches across the cabin in a continuous wrap-around strip, reinforcing the vehicle’s premium atmosphere during both day and night driving.

Still a Driver’s SUV

Despite its increased focus on electrification and luxury, BMW insists the X5 remains the most dynamic SUV in its class.

Adaptive suspension comes as standard, while Adaptive Chassis Control Professional with active roll stabilisation is available for electric and plug-in hybrid models. Near-perfect 50:50 weight distribution continues to underpin the driving experience.

The new BMW Symbiotic Drive system works alongside Level 2 driver assistance technologies to intelligently support the driver without compromising engagement. Electric variants also introduce Heart of Joy, BMW’s new integrated driving dynamics controller responsible for delivering exceptionally smooth regenerative braking and the brand’s latest Soft-Stop technology.

Hydrogen Joins the Family

Beyond battery-electric power, BMW is also preparing to introduce the BMW iX5 Hydrogen, making it the company’s first production hydrogen-powered vehicle.

While hydrogen versions will initially be limited to selected global markets and will not be offered in South Africa, their inclusion demonstrates BMW’s continued belief in multiple pathways toward zero-emission mobility.

Built in Spartanburg

Production of the new BMW X5 will begin in August 2026 at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg in South Carolina, the facility that has built every X5 since the model’s introduction nearly three decades ago.

The all-electric iX5 also marks another milestone, becoming the first battery-electric vehicle to roll off Spartanburg’s production lines. South African deliveries are expected from early 2027.

Before every Bentley becomes an icon, it begins as Before every Bentley becomes an icon, it begins as a sketch.

At the 2026 Goodwood Festival of Speed, Bentley celebrated the art behind automotive design by inviting acclaimed illustrator Stefan Marjoram to become its Artist-in-Residence.

Rather than simply displaying extraordinary cars, Bentley transformed its pavilion into a live studio where visitors watched modern grand tourers and century-old classics come to life through hand-drawn illustrations.

It’s a reminder that true luxury starts long before the factory floor—with imagination, creativity and the first confident line of a pencil.

Because every masterpiece begins as an idea.
