Prada has conquered the runway, redefined luxury travel and dressed some of the world’s most influential figures. Now, the Italian fashion house is venturing somewhere no luxury brand has gone before: the Moon. In partnership with Axiom Space, Prada has unveiled a crucial component of the next-generation spacesuit that could help astronauts survive hours on the lunar surface during NASA’s Artemis missions.
Far removed from handbags and haute couture, Prada’s latest creation is designed for one of the harshest environments imaginable.
The Italian maison has collaborated with Axiom Space to develop the Liquid Cooling and Ventilation Garment (LCVG), the high-performance inner layer worn beneath the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU) spacesuit. Engineered to keep astronauts cool, comfortable and mobile during lunar exploration, the garment represents one of the most unexpected intersections between luxury fashion and aerospace engineering.

Where Luxury Meets Lunar Engineering
Prada’s contribution extends far beyond aesthetics.
Founded in 1913, the luxury house has spent more than a century perfecting materials, tailoring, body movement and garment construction. Those same principles are now being applied to equipment designed to keep astronauts alive while operating in the Moon’s unforgiving environment.
The LCVG is worn closest to the astronaut’s body, where comfort becomes critical during spacewalks lasting up to eight hours. Developed using advanced 3D modelling techniques, the garment optimises body fit while maintaining continuous cooling and ventilation inside the spacesuit.
In space, comfort is no longer a luxury—it becomes a matter of survival.

How Prada’s Lunar Garment Works
At the heart of the garment is an intricate network of cooling tubes routed across the body’s major muscle groups.
Cold water circulates through the system, absorbing excess body heat before transferring it to the suit’s portable life-support system, where the heat is expelled into space. A fully redundant cooling circuit also serves as a backup should the primary system encounter any issues during a mission.
The LCVG also manages airflow inside the suit by continuously delivering fresh oxygen across the astronaut’s face while removing carbon dioxide, ensuring breathable conditions throughout extended lunar excursions.
Every detail has been engineered for reliability, mobility and endurance under some of the harshest conditions humans have ever faced.

A New Generation of Lunar Suits
This latest milestone follows the unveiling of the AxEMU spacesuit’s outer layer in 2024.
Designed to withstand the brutal temperature swings and micrometeoroid impacts expected near the Moon’s South Pole, the outer shell demonstrated how modern engineering could improve upon the iconic Apollo suits.
Now Prada has moved even closer to the astronaut, designing the layer responsible for regulating body temperature and enhancing long-duration comfort.
The result is a spacesuit that looks considerably more streamlined than NASA’s bulky white suits of previous generations, while subtly incorporating Prada’s signature red stripe from its activewear collection.
Fashion Has Always Had a Place in Space
Although Prada’s involvement may appear surprising, fashion and space exploration have shared common ground for decades.
Apollo-era spacesuits relied heavily on textile specialists capable of creating garments that could move naturally with the human body while remaining airtight under extreme pressure. Modern luxury fashion brings similar expertise in advanced materials, ergonomic construction and precision tailoring.
Earlier this year, fashion also entered commercial spaceflight when Lauren Sánchez collaborated with Monse to create custom flight suits for Blue Origin’s all-female mission.
Prada’s work, however, moves beyond styling.
This is functional engineering that directly contributes to astronaut performance during lunar exploration.

Preparing for Humanity’s Return to the Moon
The collaboration arrives as NASA continues preparations for its Artemis programme, which aims to return astronauts to the lunar surface for the first time since Apollo.
Future Artemis missions will rely on commercial partners such as Axiom Space to provide next-generation spacesuits capable of supporting longer, more ambitious lunar expeditions.
If successful, Prada’s contribution will become part of one of humanity’s most historic moments—the return of astronauts to the Moon after more than half a century.
