Where African narrative, fashion and hospitality converge
Cape Town’s iconic pink landmark enters a bold new chapter. Mount Nelson, A Belmond Hotel, unveils a defining creative partnership with award-winning South African designer Thebe Magugu — marking his first foray into luxury hospitality interiors and celebrating a decade of his influential fashion house.
At the heart of this collaboration is the newly revealed THEBE MAGUGU SUITE, a two-level Afro-modernist retreat discreetly positioned along the hotel’s storied Palm Avenue. More than a suite, it is an immersive environment — a space where Magugu’s exploration of African identity expands beyond the body and into architecture, ritual and atmosphere.
An Afro-Modernist Sanctuary
Developed over two years in collaboration with StudioLandt, the suite reflects a layered dialogue between African heritage and English refinement — a natural pairing within Mount Nelson’s historic framework. The interiors unfold as a sequence of intimate experiences: gathering, dining, retreating and resting — each moment intentionally composed.
On the lower level, a private lounge and dining space for up to four guests invites connection. Sculptural furnishings and locally crafted accents create an atmosphere that feels both grounded and ceremonial. A striking pendant light inspired by the Basotho hat — a nod to Magugu’s lineage — becomes a symbolic centrepiece above the dining table, while custom chairs echo the organic curvature of traditional pottery.
Walls are wrapped in hand-drawn panoramic landscapes tracing South Africa’s geography, from the Midlands to the Cape, enveloping guests in narrative detail. A rich palette of forest greens, indigo blues and warm ochres plays against terrazzo flooring, timber finishes and natural stone — balancing stately elegance with tactile warmth.
Upstairs, the king bedroom transforms into a serene private haven. Bespoke textiles and layered patterns soften the space, while a balcony frames uninterrupted views of Lion’s Head. The marble bathroom — complete with a freestanding soaking tub and aged brass accents — offers a cocoon-like sanctuary, echoing themes of enclosure and restoration.
Living with Art, Ritual and Intention
Art is integral to the suite’s identity. Curated by Magugu alongside Contemporary African Art Specialist Julia Buchanan, a rotating selection of works turns the space into a living archive of contemporary South African expression.
The attention to storytelling extends to the smallest details. Guests are welcomed with exclusive in-suite elements including a bespoke Magugu gown and slippers, Rituals by Thebe Magugu bath amenities, Basotho fabric pouches and custom tea blends created with Mount Nelson’s Tea Sommelier Craig Cupido. These teas — moving from nostalgic vanilla notes to indigenous botanicals such as impepho and buchu — are presented as part of turn-down rituals, honouring heritage through scent, flavour and memory.

MAGUGU HOUSE CAPE TOWN: A Cultural Platform
Adjoining the suite, MAGUGU HOUSE CAPE TOWN opens as a public-facing concept store and cultural space. Designed, once again, with StudioLandt, it serves as a platform for fashion, art and intellectual exchange.
Part gallery, part showroom, the space presents limited-edition garments, archival pieces, art, photography, books and collectible objects. Exhibitions will rotate quarterly in collaboration with cultural institutions and independent artists, reinforcing Mount Nelson’s evolving role as a creative nexus.
The inaugural exhibition, By Our Own Hands, created in partnership with Southern Guild, features works by Zanele Muholi and Zizipho Poswa alongside Magugu’s exploration of fashion as ritual practice. The exhibition reflects on making as a form of authorship, healing and resistance, and will run through April.
The programme extends beyond exhibitions, with monthly film screenings, salon-style conversations and cultural gatherings launching with a preview of Sonder, a documentary directed by Thuthuka Sibisi of Sibisi Studio.
A Legacy of Creative Collaboration
The unveiling builds upon Mount Nelson’s ongoing relationship with Magugu through CONFECTIONS x COLLECTIONS — the hotel’s annual Pan-African fashion initiative. What began as a runway showcase now finds permanent architectural expression.
Patrick Fisher, General Manager of Mount Nelson, describes the collaboration as a natural evolution: a commitment to spaces that are not only aesthetically compelling, but culturally grounded and purposeful.
An Immersive Cape Town Experience
Guests of the THEBE MAGUGU SUITE can host intimate dinners, enjoy slow mornings overlooking the city’s dramatic landscape, and access curated cultural experiences beyond the hotel — including private connections to Southern Guild, Norval Foundation and Zeitz MOCAA.
Additional offerings range from bespoke concierge services to private wellness sessions and dining at the much-anticipated Amura by Ángel León — creating a stay defined by narrative depth and local resonance.
