After more than a decade away from international shelves, one of Japan’s most celebrated single malts is making a long-awaited return. Nikka Whisky has announced the revival of the Miyagikyo 10 Year Single Malt, a bottle that disappeared during Japan’s whisky shortage and has since become one of the most requested age-statement expressions among collectors and enthusiasts.
There was a time when Japan’s whisky boom became its greatest challenge.
Global demand surged so dramatically that many of the country’s legendary distilleries were forced to discontinue age-statement expressions as maturing stocks simply couldn’t keep pace. Among the most lamented casualties was the Nikka Miyagikyo 10 Year Single Malt, a whisky that quietly disappeared from international markets more than a decade ago.
Now, after nearly 11 years, the acclaimed single malt is making its return.

A Distillery Defined by Elegance
Named after Nikka’s second distillery, established in 1969, Miyagikyo offers a distinctly different personality from its coastal sibling, Yoichi.
Where Yoichi is celebrated for smoky, maritime character reminiscent of traditional Scotch whiskies, Miyagikyo embraces elegance and refinement.
Matured in a combination of sherry oak and new American oak casks, the whisky is known for its silky texture and layered profile of orchard fruits, citrus, vanilla and delicate oak spice. The result is a single malt that balances richness with remarkable freshness.
A New Look, the Same Signature Character
The returning expression arrives with subtle packaging updates that reflect both sustainability and the distillery’s natural surroundings.
The label is now produced using plant-based washi paper, while its deep forest-green colour replaces the previous burgundy design as a tribute to the lush landscape surrounding the Miyagikyo distillery.
Inside the bottle, however, the philosophy remains unchanged.
Nikka describes the whisky as opening with aromas of crisp apple, citrus and sweet vanilla before revealing a palate of ripe fruit, malt sweetness and gentle spice, finishing with refined dryness that has become synonymous with the distillery.

A Whisky Worth Waiting For
For longtime Nikka collectors, the return represents more than the reintroduction of a discontinued bottle.
It marks the revival of an era when Japanese whisky established itself among the world’s finest.
“With the 10-year-old expression, we wanted to reveal a new dimension of Miyagikyo’s signature character,” explains Emiko Kaji, Nikka Whisky’s Global PR Leader. “The result reflects both a decade of maturation and our vision for Miyagikyo’s future—honouring the distillery’s heritage while showcasing the confidence and craftsmanship of a new generation.”
Scarcity Remains Part of the Story
Collectors will need to move quickly.
Although the first release is being distributed in limited international quantities, the return of Miyagikyo 10 Year is significant for whisky enthusiasts everywhere. For South African collectors, it serves as welcome news that one of Japan’s most admired age-statement single malts has finally returned after more than a decade.
While the allocation is modest, the return of Miyagikyo 10 Year signals renewed confidence in Japan’s recovering whisky reserves after years of constrained supply.
For enthusiasts, it is more than another premium bottle.
It is the return of one of modern Japanese whisky’s defining expressions—and a reminder that some spirits are worth waiting more than a decade for.
