Thebe Magugu’s cultural platform brings together film, conversation and community as acclaimed multidisciplinary artist Thuthuka Sibisi premieres a powerful exploration of Black masculinity.

This July, Magugu House invites audiences in Johannesburg and Cape Town to experience one such moment with Sonder, the latest short documentary by acclaimed multidisciplinary artist Thuthuka Sibisi.
Presented simultaneously across both cities on 16 July 2026, the screening forms part of Magugu House’s expanding cultural programme, reinforcing the platform’s commitment to contemporary African storytelling through film, art and dialogue.
A Story Beneath the Surface
Running for 26 minutes, Sonder examines the often-unspoken emotional lives of Black Zulu men, navigating themes of brotherhood, violence, desire, love and vulnerability within systems shaped by apartheid and inherited ideas of masculinity.
Rather than offering simple answers, the film creates space for reflection, presenting identity as something layered, personal and constantly evolving.
It is a work that invites audiences to engage with both individual experience and broader social histories.
The Vision of Thuthuka Sibisi
Known for working across theatre, music, installation, sound and performance, Thuthuka Sibisi has established himself as one of South Africa’s most compelling multidisciplinary artists.
His practice explores queer identity, memory, colonial histories and belonging through immersive artistic experiences that challenge conventional narratives.
Internationally, his work has been presented at institutions including Tate Modern, the Brooklyn Academy of Music and the Dutch National Opera & Ballet, while collaborations with celebrated artists such as Gregory Maqoma, Dada Masilo and William Kentridge have further cemented his reputation on the global stage.
With Sonder, Sibisi continues that exploration through the language of documentary film.
Magugu House as a Cultural Platform
Since its launch, Magugu House has evolved beyond fashion into one of South Africa’s most exciting multidisciplinary cultural spaces.
Founded by internationally acclaimed designer Thebe Magugu, the platform regularly brings together exhibitions, screenings, performances and conversations that celebrate contemporary African creativity across disciplines.
The presentation of Sonder reflects that broader vision, positioning Magugu House as a meeting place where fashion, visual art, film and cultural dialogue intersect.

An Intimate Evening of Film and Community
The screening will take place simultaneously at Magugu House Johannesburg in Dunkeld and Magugu House Cape Town at The Mount Nelson.
Guests will be welcomed from 6:00 pm, with the film beginning at 7:00 pm.
Admission includes a welcome drink, encouraging conversation before and after the screening in an atmosphere designed to foster artistic exchange and community.
