A legendary racing chronograph enters a new generation with a 42mm case, an 80-hour movement and a sharper sporting character
As Formula 1 arrives in Madrid, TAG Heuer is putting one of its most recognisable racing chronographs back into the spotlight.
The Swiss luxury watchmaker has unveiled the new TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Sport, introduced on 7 September 2026 during the FORMULA 1 TAG HEUER GRAN PREMIO DE ESPAÑA 2026. The launch comes as TAG Heuer continues its role as Title Partner of the race and Official Timekeeper of Formula 1.
The Carrera has always been closely connected to the measurement of time at speed. Its origins reach back to 1963, when Jack Heuer introduced a chronograph created specifically with professional drivers in mind. Inspired by the Carrera Panamericana, the watch was built around a simple principle: legibility at speed.
More than six decades later, that principle remains at the centre of the Carrera Chronograph Sport.
A MORE COMPACT CARRERA
The most significant change comes in the proportions.
The new Carrera Chronograph Sport moves from a 44mm case to 42mm, while the lug-to-lug measurement has been reduced from 49.8mm to 48.6mm. Its thickness also drops from 15.48mm to 14.17mm, creating a more compact profile and a more controlled presence on the wrist.
TAG Heuer has also redesigned the case with brushed sides, while the bezel combines a steel cradle with a polished ceramic insert. The result retains the technical character expected of a racing chronograph while giving the watch a more refined everyday profile.
The pushers take their inspiration from pistons and high-performance engine components, reinforcing the connection between the watch and the mechanical world that originally shaped the Carrera’s identity.
On the upper right lug sits the Victory Wreath, a signature design code that connects the latest Carrera to the language of achievement that has accompanied the collection from the track to the wrist.
THE ENGINE WITHIN
At the heart of the Carrera Chronograph Sport is TAG Heuer’s in-house Calibre TH20-00.
The automatic movement delivers an 80-hour power reserve and can be viewed through the open caseback, where the TAG Heuer shield appears on the oscillating mass. The watch is also covered by a five-year warranty.
The mechanical architecture is matched by a redesigned H-shaped steel bracelet, now tapered for improved comfort and a more elegant appearance. An easy-link adjustment system allows the wearer to alter the bracelet at home without tools. A perforated leather strap is also available, drawing directly from classic motorsport aesthetics.
FIVE EXPRESSIONS OF SPEED
The new collection introduces five timepieces, each interpreting the Carrera Chronograph Sport through colour and material.
The blue dial continues the Carrera’s signature sporting language, pairing a sunray-brushed surface with silver counters, grey markings and a blue ceramic tachymeter bezel.
A teal green version brings a more contemporary character, while the silver dial takes on the classic panda configuration, with black counters and a black ceramic bezel.
Then comes the most overtly aggressive expression: the black opalin dial, punctuated by red chronograph details. The red hands and minute markings recall the visual language of dashboard instrumentation and racing timing.
Across the collection, Arabic numerals replace the indexes found on the previous model, improving legibility while giving the chronograph a stronger sporting identity. The redesigned flange and enhanced tricompax arrangement further organise the dial around its central function: reading elapsed time quickly and clearly.
BUILT FOR THE ROAD, DESIGNED FOR THE WRIST
The new Carrera Chronograph Sport measures 42mm, with a sapphire crystal treated on both sides for anti-reflection and a ceramic tachymeter bezel.
The black opalin reference features a black flange, white and red markings, three chronograph counters and a date display at 6 o’clock. It is water-resistant to 100 metres and comes on the redesigned steel H-shaped bracelet.
The blue, green and silver versions share the same fundamental architecture, allowing the collection to move between traditional racing-watch codes and a more contemporary expression.
European recommended pricing is €6,550 for the steel-bracelet versions, with the perforated brown calfskin leather version priced at €6,350 in Europe. The watches become available from September 2026, with the leather reference launching in October in most markets.
BACK IN THE FAST LANE
The Carrera Chronograph Sport arrives at an appropriate moment.
Its Madrid debut places it directly inside the world that has shaped the Carrera for generations: Formula 1, racing, precision and the relentless measurement of time.
But the latest Carrera isn’t attempting to recreate the past. Its smaller proportions, contemporary case architecture, updated dial treatment and modern movement bring the racing chronograph into a new chapter.
The philosophy remains remarkably familiar.

And in the Carrera Chronograph Sport, TAG Heuer has given one of its defining racing watches another reason to take the lead.
